Introduction to the LKP

Introduction to the LKP

The LKP (LKP) makes it possible for most Linux applications to run on UnixWare 7 systems. The LKP provides a Linux kernel interface while retaining full and complete operation as a native UnixWare 7 system. Most Linux applications running in the LKP environment function as if they were executed on a native Caldera OpenLinux system.

The LKP uses RPMs from Caldera OpenLinux 3.1, which is based on version 2.4 of the Linux kernel. The LKP also uses glibc 2.2.1.

The LKP offers a powerful solution for:

Benefits

The LKP provides many benefits including the ability to run multiple environments, and both UnixWare 7 and Linux applications, on the same system. You also get the proven performance, reliability and scalability offered by UnixWare 7.

Multiple environments

You can run both UnixWare 7 and Linux applications on the same system at the same time, and you don't have to boot a different operating system to do it.

UnixWare 7 and Linux applications

Being able to run both UnixWare 7 and Linux applications on the same system offers many advantages:

Kernel security

When you work in the LKP environment, it is the UnixWare 7 kernel that executes Linux system calls. The UnixWare 7 kernel is recognized as having excellent reliability and security. There is no Linux code inside the UnixWare 7 kernel.

Performance and reliability

You get the ability to run Linux applications on a high-performance UnixWare 7 system with proven reliability.

Scalability

UnixWare 7 provides superior scalability. Up to 32GB of main memory (up to 16GB general purpose memory) and 8 processors can be supported.
